 ADULT EDUCATION AT B’NAI AVIV

img0214_revised.jpg

Jewish Education is a life-long process and as adults our thirst for knowledge increases each year. We are proud to offer a variety of learning opportunities which cover many topics including the Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah 2 year program, Beginning Hebrew Reading, Israel Chavurah, Holocaust Studies, 3rd Annual Laura Fox Film Festival (this year on Saturday nights!), Passover Workshop/Seder Strategies, Torah & Haftorah Trop classes, book reviews, Holiday Recipe ESwaps, and much more.

We are pleased to highlight our newest program,”The Mitzvah Initiative,” which is a collarborative educational endeavor with The Jewish Theological Seminary of America. B’nai Aviv has been selected to participate with approximately 30 other Conservative congregations across North America!  Chancellor Arnold Eisen, of JTS, has taken the lead role in creating this 10 session “Jewish Personal Growth” learning experience in order to talk about mitzvah in the lives of Conservative Jews today.   The M.I. (Mitzvah Initiative) seminar will study together, share personal approaches to belief in God, feelings of belonging to the Jewish community, as well as reasons for observing or not observing specific religious practices.  The M.I. seminar will study, discuss and explore Torah texts, Rabbinic texts that expand and explain Torah, texts of Jewish thought. With multiple possible meanings for mitzvah, Jews today can locate where they stand with respect to Jewish tradition in all its complexities. They can also find new entryways to living a more engaged Jewish life. Along the way, the creation of new definitions leads to more of the shared language and shared vision that build a community, utilizing materials prepared by J.T.S.  Both Rabbi & Melinda Kieffer will facilitate and teach the curriculum, having participated in the Chancellor’s M.I. Educators Seminar at JTS last June.  They are excited to share this experience with our B’nai Aviv family! No requirements – just an excitement to learn together!

Registration for all courses can be downloaded from this site.
